3.5/5 ~ Sydney trio Elephant have dished out a compact debut release, packed with eclectic, aggressive rock, utilising a synthesiser as a substitute for the traditional rock guitar to accompany the dominant bass lines and busy drumming. The modest production values lend a raw edge, with enterprising vocals rounding out the package. Elephant explore a range of oddball rhythms, sound effects and varied tempos throughout the eight tracks. Aptly titled opener ‘Bruise’ melds hyperactive rhythms with melodic, sludgy rock. Dual vocals maintain an element of originality and surprise while alternately recalling such heavyweights as Mike Patton and Jello Biafra; angry screams and punky snarls balanced by Patton-esque melodic crooning. Bursts of aggression are offset by a strong grasp of dynamics and melody. This is nicely represented on the lengthy ‘Shallow Girl’, which builds ominously towards a punchy climax. Elephant’s colourful vocals, energetic delivery and refusal to stick to predictable song structures, create a challenging and rewarding listen for those who like their rock left of centre. ~ Luke Saunders

Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle - 17.06.2011

Newcastle trio Bat Yoghurt warmed the Cambridge stage for headliners, Elephant, with their hard-driven and distorted alternative rock: it’s heavy sound derivative of 70’s prog. The impressively mustachioed Gerant Kenneth added bass-induced synthesizer to the band’s drums and occasional vocals, providing a dramatic touch to their experimental tunes, and an eery on-stage presence. ‘You’re Heaps Sincere’ was a standout - jagged, intricate and fast-paced - it proved a crowd favourite, giving the performance a burst of energy towards the end of the set. The more contemporary-sounding Elephant followed on the bill, Kenneth taking to the stage once again: this trio made up of lead bass guitar, synthesizer and a notably large drum kit. Their contrasting dual vocals created an intense chemistry between the elements of thrashing drums and now melodic synthesized sounds. The band kept the audience mesmerised with a steady set of obscurely-structured songs, which were incredibly thunderous for a three-piece rock outfit. ‘Cannonball Gnome’ highlighted Elephant’s epic set and was the band’s most memorable song. - Charli Hutchison

ELEPHANT & Bat Yoghurt June 2011

The stage shattering ELEPHANT (Syd) join forces with the frenetic and eclectic Bat Yoghurt (Newcastle) for a tour of the east coast that will showcase not only the original approach to trio driven rock the two bands have invented, but will also see the release of both bands debut albums ‘E’ and ‘Non-Negotiable’ respectively.

The members of both ELEPHANT and Bat Yoghurt carry with them years of experience taken from the plethora of their former acts which include Schlauncher, Spazmoo, Athol and Strength to Strength. These two bands are a must for true lovers of smart and challenging rock tunes delivered with unbridled energy.
